Thai Food: Nakhon Kitchen

First step of rainbow arrived at the all famous Nakhon Kitchen. Each time my bus passes by this area, I never fail to see the long queue outside the restaurant and it has always made me wondered what was the reason behind this long queue.Well Singaporeans are well-known to have a good standard for food, so to have a long queue for a non air-conditioned eating place, the food must be good for its value. So on a cosy Saturday, I decided to check out the place.

And wow, they even have a sign here which says "Q here".

Well my friend advised us to meet earlier because she usually has to queue for about an hour before being able to get into the restaurant. But we were so blessed that we did not even have to queue and we managed to get seats into the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. And best of all, it rained earlier, so the place was much cooler than expected.

The first thing that caught my attention when I sat down was this basket. It was neatly placed on the tables alongside their utensils. Their toilet roll was nicely placed in the basket, that totally add points to the restaurant layout in generally. Though the thought of having a toilet roll might put you away, especially in a clean developed country like Singapore, but yet it gave me a dining experience by the seaside. There were no water landscapes around, but maybe because of the cooling weather brought by the rain, it felt totally comfortable on a Saturday afternoon.

Not to be missed is their Tom Yum soup, we went for the clear chicken soup version. For those who are more daring, feel free to challenge the non-clear red version. It was a captivating taste between sour and slight spice, but it was not too unbearable. Just a note, there are baby tomatoes in their soup so maybe be cautious before you bite the whole baby tomatoes in your mouth as they have well absorb the soup.

Pineapple rice, also a famous choice among Thai food. What I like about their pineapple rice is the freshness of the prawns. The pineapple on the side looks hard so I gave it a miss. I think they simply look good for a decoration. Definitely something I would go back for a second time.

Well fried honey chicken is not much of a specialty of Thai food, but if you like fried and sweet food on your table, I don't see why you have to give this dish a miss.

And always leave space for dessert... This red ruby was the most memorable of this meal. I have yet to figure out why the dessert was called Red Ruby but it was definitely a special dessert. If you would like to compare to the famous Singapore dessert Ice Kachang, I would not exactly say they are similar but definitely worth the try after a good Thai meal. Red Ruby contain traces of coconut flesh and jackfruit.

If you have a nice company and some time to kill for a good meal, Nakhon Kitchen is definitely recommended!

Nakhon Kitchen is situated at #01-341, 212 Hougang Street 21. Buses 112,113, 15 and 119 brings you right in front of the restaurant. Alternatively you may take a train to Kovan Station, and this restaurant is just 340m walk from the station.
